Teeth: Movie Review
Posted by Mike Peterson on March 9th, 2008 filed in ReviewComment now »
For the record, I need to say that Teeth is by far one of the most disturbing, sick and funny movies I have ever seen. I was able to watch a midnight showing of Teeth at the Uptown Thearter in Minneapolis on Saturday. For a cold winter night, the crowd turned out to see what I had heard was one of the most talked about films at Sundance. Just to let you know, I’m not a big fan of the horror but my wife is. She and I had heard about this film and when I found out it was playing, well, we just had to go.
Teeth is a movie about a young girl named Dawn who is a big supporter of the Promise Ring. Now for those who don’t know what that is, it is a ring that teens wear promising that they will refrain from anytime of sexual contact with each other or themselves and keeping them pure until they are married. Sounds like a great cause.
Dawn also finds out that she has teeth in her vigina or Va Jay Jay if you are a fan of Oprah. I’m going to pause here and let that sink in. Teeth, in her vigina. Are you still with me? These teeth come out when she is the object of sexual violence. I know that you want examples, that will come. This is a myth called Vigina Dentata which is defined as follows:
Vagina dentata, the unconscious belief that a woman may eat or castrate her partner during intercourse — literally, the “toothed vagina” — is a classic mythological symbol of men’s fear of sex. It appears in the mythology of countless cultures and societies down through the years.
• One Native American myth states “A fish inhabits the vagina of the Terrible Mother; the hero is the man who overcomes the Terrible Mother, breaks the teeth out of her vagina, and so makes her into a woman.”
• The Yanomamo said one of the first beings on earth was a woman whose vagina became a toothed mouth and bit off her consort’s penis.
• The more patriarchal the society, the more deeply rooted the fear seems to be. Men of Malekula, having overthrown their matriarchate, were haunted by a Yonic spirit called “that which draws us to It so that It may devour us.”
• Chinese patriarchs said women’s genitals were not only gateways to immortality but also “executioners of men.”
• Moslem aphorisms said: “Three things are insatiable: the desert, the grave, and a woman’s vulva.”
• Polynesians said the savior-god Maui tried to find eternal life by crawling into the mouth (or vagina) of his mother Hina, in effect trying to return to the womb of the Creatress; but she bit him in two and killed him.
Looking into, touching or entering the female orifice seems fraught with hidden fears, signified by the confusion of sex with death in overwhelming numbers of male minds and myths. Since vulvas have labiae, “lips,” many men have believed that behind the lips lie teeth. Christian authorities of the middle ages taught that certain witches, with the help of the moon and magic spells, could grow fangs in their vaginas. They likened women’s genitals to the “yawning” mouth of hell. How’s that for romantic?
Dawn finds out that the boys she likes are a bunch of dirty bags and during a rape, the teeth come out. After she finds out the boy she thought was a hero for her but he had just bet a friend that he could get her into bed, the teeth come out. Even the poor OBGYN get’s his fingers bit off because she didn’t know what was happening. I’m not going to say anymore because I don’t want to ruin the movie. All I can say is that an event that leads up to the finally and the ending are some of the best dark comedy moments I have seen.
I have to say that being a guy and watching this movie with a bunch of women might not be the best idea. One of the best things about going to a midnight movie in Minneapolis is the crowd. The women cheered, the guys groaned and everyone had a great time. I think that what made this movie great was the combination of the dark, sick humor of this film and the crowd that watched it. This is a movie to see with people.
So, guys remember, be kind to your ladies, love them, treat them right or else they may take more than just your money!

Cloverfield: Movie Review
Posted by Mike Peterson on February 3rd, 2008 filed in ReviewComment now »
For anyone who knows me, you know I love Godzilla. Monster movies are great. Men in rubber suits walking over models of a city, what can be better? I even had a soft spot for the 1998 Godzilla movie staring Matthew Broedrick.
Now, let’s talk about Cloverfield. I remember the teaser trailer before Transformers. I remember thinking “great another Blair Witch” movie style. You have to understand that over the years I’ve fallen into the hype of big, blockbuster movies. I have been disappointed way too much now for me to see a movie opening weekend. I have to really see a movie to go opening weekend. Cloverfield was one of these movies I figured I’d wait a few weeks. With the hand held camera look, I figured an interesting movie but a let down like the 1999’s Blair Witch. I stood in line to see the movie and was very let down by it.
Fast forward 9 years, I find myself standing in line to see Cloverfield. Not opening weekend but a few weeks later. Since I have no interest in the Super Bowl, my wife and I thought a movie would be good. Off to the Regal Cinema we go to see a monster movie. Now, I have to say, I figured that this would suck. I was wrong.
This movie follows Rob and his friends at a going away party for him. I guess he’s got some new job in Japan and he is leaving his brother, his friends and the girl he loves but doesn’t know how to tell her or something like that. Then after a few conflicts and people leaving mad, everything starts. Monster attacks, building blowing up, and a very eerie reminder of 9/11 as one of the buildings fall and the groups has to take cover inside a store as the debris rolling past the windows. One of the most interesting parts of the movies is when the group comes out and they find a friend shell shocked in the streets, all she has to say is “it was eating everyone”.
The main plot is that Rob gets a phone call from Beth, the girl he loves. She is very hurt and he must get to her. So, he and his friends head toward the monster instead of getting out of the city. Now, I’m not going to ruin anything else.
I have to say that for a short movie, it seems a lot longer. This was the first movie that I didn’t get a chance to finish my soda and popcorn because I didn’t want to miss anything. I was very impressed with JJ Abrams’ production of this movie. I can’t say enough good things about this movie. I was entertained from start to finish, the slow parts a good break to show the softer side of the characters and the humor was placed in the right spots to break up mood and give it a real look as I thought, “I have friends that would have said that”. The hand held camera worked and I had to find out more about the monster since there was not a lot said about it.
Anyone who loves monster movies or loves good, simple movies, Cloverfield is for you.
